    Square and Rectangular Bases

    October 14, 2018 /

Baskets are the best because they are just so darn USEFUL! What’s more, we all know that handmade baskets are also beautiful, unique and stunningly stylish. So of course it makes sense to be able to create baskets in all shapes and sizes, to meet every possible need! The wonderful thing about our basket bases is that they make creating any shape and size so simple!  No need for counting stitches, increasing, wondering how to make the base less floppy or stressing about how to make a corner.  Corners shmorners! You just put a stitch in each hole, keep calm and carry on.  We’ve designed our angled bases with gently rounded…

Three different methods for Casting On

    September 11, 2018 /

There is always more than one way to do something! Just because I like to ‘cast on’ to our timber basket base a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s the only way. Here are three different methods for casting on, using our cute little baby 10cm bases. Have a play and see which one you like the best!  Check out this five minute video for the best explanation, or read on below. Method One A round of slip stitches first, followed by a round of single crochets. This is my preferred method, because it covers the holes nicely, prevents anything little from falling through, and provides a nice cushioned buffer between…

Our bases are so versatile, the options are virtually endless!  Here are just a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing...

  • planter baskets
  • decorative table features
  • storage for almost anything!
  • functional and stylish trays
  • laundry baskets
  • utensil holders
  • office/desk organisation
  • nursery/children's room organisation
  • bathroom accessories (make up brushes, cotton tips, hair accessories)
  • safe storage of essential oils

This really depends of what type of basket you want to create, and for what purpose.  Our size range caters to a unlimited number of possibilities!  Our largest 30cm base creates a basket that is large enough to be used as a kitchen tray, a dining table feature piece, a roomy fruit bowl, or with high sides to be a toy basket, a laundry basket, a place to store your yarn stash, a large planter basket - and these are just some of the ideas!

Our smallest 10cm base makes the perfect bedside table basket to hold rings and jewelry, a pretty place to keep children's hair accessories, a place to drop your keys  - or with high side to hold pens and pencils, bathroom accessories, makeup brushes, crochet hooks...and more!

When choosing your sizes, it's important to note that the finished basket ends up measuring 2-3cm larger in diameter than the basket base itself.  For example, a 12cm base will make a 14cm finished basket.
If you are unsure of where to start, we recommend ordering a 12cm, 18cm, and 26cm to give you an idea of the range of sizes and possibilities.

We suggest using a 5mm - 6mm size hook for 'casting on' to the basket base, and then changing to a slightly larger hook (6.5mm-8mm) to make the basket walls.

Cait prefers to use a 8mm hook with round bases, but as with all crochet - a small adjustment may be necessary, depending on the tension (level of 'tightness') you crochet with.  We tend to find that a slightly smaller hook size works better for the Square and Rectangular bases (ie. 6.5mm).

If you find that after a few rounds, your basket walls are turning 'inwards' too much, try switching to a larger size hook. Alternatively, if your basket walls are splaying too far 'outwards', try switching to a smaller size hook.

More experienced crocheters may choose to deliberately alter the size of their hook to create a differently shaped basket.

T-shirt yarn is bulky weight cotton/jersey yarn which is created from the recycled off-cuts from the textile industry, which would have otherwise been disposed of as landfill. It is a wonderful medium to work with as it is soft yet very sturdy, comes in a broad range of colours, and works up very quickly compared to typical styles of yarn.

At Woven Glory, we love that not only are our beautiful creations bringing colour, style and happiness in homes - we are also helping to reduce landfill and care for our world.

Yes!!  We are currently in the process of designing and testing a whole range of new shapes and sizes!  If you would like to stay in the loop about our collection releases, follow us on Facebook and Instagram (@basket_bases_australia) and join our Newsletter list to be the first to hear about what's happening AND to receive special discount codes to use with your orders.

This is what everyone wants to know!  Check out our Blog for detailed step-by-step instructions, photos and links to video tutorials.

Woven Glory is also planning to conduct basket making workshops for those who love the more personal approach.

Don't forget that you can always contact us if you get stuck or have specific question relating to basket making.  We want you to love making baskets as much as we do, so we are keen to make learning as enjoyable for you as possible!

Like all new skills, learning to crochet a basket can take some getting used to at first (you should see the first baskets we ever made!) but with a little persistence and patience, we are confident you will be up and running in no time!

Even if it takes a little while to perfect, the joy and fulfillment you experience from making your very own baskets is well worth the effort! The beauty of crochet is that there are no two items exactly alike, and your personal touch is what brings heart and character to your pieces.

Of course! We love to support handmade business and are happy to be able to add a unique selling point to your items, plus help you save time on making all those crochet bases!

In fact, we would LOVE to see and help promote your work, so if you are using Instagram, be sure to use #basket_bases_australia when you post!

Another amazing benefit of our bases is that they are able to be personalized!

This service ranges from once-off customization (ie. for a special gift with a name, date, verse, humourous quote for example), to repeated personal touches (ie. Handmade by Jen, Made with Love) and branding with your own business logo (like our Woven Glory baskets).

It’s best to speak to us about your ideas and we can discuss your needs and provide quotes for this service on a base-by-base basis. (Pun intended!)

We do! Accounts are offered to businesses who meet our wholesale criteria. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about our wholesale prices and conditions.

Yes! We are able to ship to most countries.
