Three different methods for Casting On

There is always more than one way to do something! Just because I like to ‘cast on’ to our timber basket base a certain way, doesn’t mean it’s the only way.

Here are three different methods for casting on, using our cute little baby 10cm bases. Have a play and see which one you like the best!  Check out this five minute video for the best explanation, or read on below.

Method One
A round of slip stitches first, followed by a round of single crochets.

This is my preferred method, because it covers the holes nicely, prevents anything little from falling through, and provides a nice cushioned buffer between your basket and the surface it sits on.  Tip: If you are finding it a little tight to get the hook in and out between the slip stitches, push the hook all the way through each hole before starting the single crochet round. You can watch a demonstration here.

Method Two

A round of single crochets, without the layer of slip stitches first.

This method is the fastest, so great for pumping out baskets super quickly!  It leave an ‘exposed’ hole around the edge of the basket.

Method Three

Leaving an exposed basket edge.  This is done by a round of slip stitches first, followed by single crochets under the back of the slip stitches.

This gives a different shape and unique look, but is a little more fiddly.  Tip: The key is using loose slip stitches.

So…which method do you prefer?  Feel free to use ‘testing’ out the methods as a perfectly good excuse to sit and make baskets!
